The Front Door and The Back Door

Doors can be interesting. They can also be ordinary or ugly.

I am happy that our realtor suggested that we paint our front door. A black door has a modern and up-to-date feel to it. Our realtor said, “As soon as we painted our door black, our house sold!” Until last December, our realtor lived directly across the street from us, and knew what needed to be updated to sell her house and our house quickly.

Years ago, Alan wanted to add a storm door for energy efficiency and I did not mind. I had never liked our brown front door and we had looked into replacing it, but quickly learned the cost and the complexity of buying and setting a beautiful new real wood door. Spending $2000 on a new door at our current house did not make financial sense to us. Both of us could live with our current door.

At our new home, we will have a solid wood door and we will not have a storm door. It is our choice to stain the door or paint it; however, after consulting with our interior decorator, I feel that painting our front door the trim color will give the front of our house a more modern and sleek feel.

Shortly after moving into our current home, we replaced the back sliding glass door with the back door in the photo. It fits a dog door better and it is more aesthetically pleasing than a sliding glass door. I find it intriguing that Alan brought it up first. He said, “I really do not like sliding glass doors.” And I said, “OK!”

We had left the back door natural for years because we liked the look. However, our realtor suggested painting it the same color as the trim. It definitely looks more finished now.

At our new house, we have had the opportunity to select some of the doors. We will have 4 exterior doors in our new house and they will all be slightly different. One is at least 100 years old; it has so much character! I am excited to see the finished product in late August or early September.
