Mt. Eden

Magical Mt. Eden. I had heard that New Zealand was spectacularly beautiful. But, I have seen spectacular and beautiful together in Oregon, in California, in Costa Rica…The list goes on. Before reaching New Zealand, my expectations were extremely high – and perhaps unrealistic – for any land. Yet early on my expectations were met and surpassed.

I stood in awe for many minutes on the top of Mt. Eden. I experienced the clean air, the mist, the damp chill. I saw the spectacular beauty instantly and I have held onto it.

From the airport to Mt. Eden, our group drove streets which reminded me of Vancouver, British Columbia with their hills and endless green cilantro leaf shapes against the night sky. Houses on the hills blending in almost. Surreal.

I saw my first sunrise in New Zealand within 2 hours of stepping down on the North Island. On June 12, 2011, the sun rose at 7:31AM at Mt. Eden. I stood on the viewing platform farthest to the West in my raincoat with my hair resting loosely down my back, without a wind to it. I saw the sun rise and I felt its strong personality. Not alone, two photographers stood close by to capture it. They wait days for the perfect sunrise, and on this day, with the clouds and fog, the sun illuminated the sky a splendid orange, the color of Tang.
