Guinness Brewery Tour in Dublin, Ireland

On our first day in Ireland, we tasted Guinness on the Guinness Brewery Tour. We both love Guinness and had wanted to tour the Guinness facility. Years ago, somebody told me that they serve the beer warm in Ireland. Not true today. The Guinness was cold. I did not have a warm beer in Ireland.

The Guinness Brewery Tour walked us through beer making 101 and how making Guinness differs from making other beers. I had been on a large commercial beer making tour in Amsterdam for Heineken and noticed a lot of overlap in the two tours. A brewery tour is a form of marketing.

The Guinness Brewery Tour is big and impersonal like the Heineken Tour in Amsterdam. Both shuffle their ticket holders through their doors, up their stairs, around their posters and history, to the fresh beer at the end. The best part of any large commercial beer making tour is the beer because it is freshest at the facility.

On the Heineken Tour in Amsterdam, I noticed a distinct difference in the taste of the Heineken on the tour versus in the bottle. I cannot say that I noticed a remarkable difference in the taste of the Guinness on the tour versus in the can or on tap in the U.S. Now a beer drinking native Irelander would tell you differently. The only difference I noted is that the Guinness on tap in Ireland is more frothy than the Guinness on tap in the U.S. From what our guide told us, an additional piece of equipment is needed and most bars outside of Ireland do not buy this piece of equipment to make the beer froth the same amount.

The Guinness bar looks out over Dublin. On our first day in Dublin, it was cloudy. Dublin reminded me of New England city life because it is a lively intellectual city with many quick wits that do not let a joke escape them. I noticed a love of literature, art and Guinness. Perfect for the bohemian!
