San Antonio Half Marathon: November 14, 2010

Alan, Stacey, and I carpooled to the San Antonio Half and stayed together. My decision to run the San Antonio Half was last minute: I love San Antonio and racing in the town where I feel I grew up. I lived in San Antonio for 5.5 years from slightly over 23.5 years old to almost 29 years old.

Stacey had booked a hotel room and we told her that we would split the cost with her. Our pre-race meal was at the Westin downtown at Zocca, an Italian restaurant. We got lucky and found a 3 seater high bar table to dine early.

For this San Antonio Half, I finished in 2:07:40. This finish time is not adjusted for the train that stopped all the runners in Corral 6 from going forward for at least 1 to possibly 6 minutes while it passed. Such a memory, I think today.

Our post-race meal was at La Margarita.

There is No I in Team

I finished my first marathon on 10/22/2011. I say finished because I set out to complete it. I did not race it. Finish vs. race? What do these two words mean to me in the context of a running event? Finish is to hold back, to leave something on the course, instead of risk not completing it. Race is to go all out, leave nothing on the course, and risk walking away without a finisher’s medal.

Until the morning of 11/13/2011, I was still undecided on whether or not I was going to do my 2nd marathon or my 3rd San Antonio Half. I am deliberately using the word do, instead of finish or race.

My indecision to do the full or the half caused some stress for Alan. I had already finished my 1st marathon 3 weeks earlier and he supported me in my effort. Understandably, he wanted me to support him for his 1st marathon. Honestly, until race day, I had some selfish desire to do my 2nd marathon and I had internal conflict with doing my 2nd marathon or supporting Alan on his 1st marathon.

I woke up on November 13, 2011 and knew in my heart that it was Alan’s day. I said to him as we were getting ready, “I’m going to do the half.” I did not pack any Shot Bloks or Nuun on me because I knew if I had them with me, I might change my mind midway through the run if I was having a good day.

Alan and I kissed our goodbyes and I wished him luck. I was puttering around, not really sure if I even wanted to run. Did I really want to do another half on this day? Free biscuits and gravy in the hotel sounded better.

Somehow, Alan lingered in our hotel room a few extra minutes and I snapped to it and said I‘d walk down to the start with him. I knew if I did not join him, I would end up eating breakfast and being a spectator for the day.

I am an ENFP. I am not a linear thinker. I work intuitively. This is important to the story and why I had made so many last minute decisions. It drives Alan crazy; he is an ESFP. This one letter difference between an N and S can make for some funny and maddening moments in our journey together.

I followed his lead. It was his race. I held his arm as we meandered around other runners to where he thought he should be in the corral line up. We lined up less than 5 minutes before the race start. No butterflies, nothing. After all, I was just planning on having a leisurely run.

Until, I stepped it up and said, “I’ll pace you.” Now, I thought it was a little silly. I thought he might not go for it. But I know I can bring it when I need to bring it. And I started getting the brilliant idea in my head that I was going to race the half.

Alan loved the idea of me pacing him. He thought it would slow him down and he needed that early on. Typically, when Alan and I run together, we do not run together. After a short warm up, he always ends up ahead and I just do my own la-di-da thing.

Alan and I ran together the first 11 miles of his 1st marathon and my 3rd San Antonio Half. He motivated me to go faster. I kept him from going too fast. He remarked at the end, after he finished his 1st marathon, “I am so proud of you. You kept up my pace after the 11 miles.” And that I did. He ran his half in 2:08:32. I ran my half in 2:08:40. I raced it. Not a Personal Record (PR), but for a season of no speed work, I impressed myself.

Now, I know I have it in me to race at least one marathon. Why do I know this? I do not want to run another 6 hour marathon. I am Ok if, in my attempt to go faster, I do not complete my 2nd marathon, but I will race it.

After my half, I chatted with several other Rogue half-marathoners and spectators and started a new mission: to cheer on all the Rogues who I saw completing the marathon and find Alan, my personal Rogue. I removed the timing chip from my running shoe, stored my half-marathon medal in my Spibelt, and did not remove the race bib that was pinned to my shorts. Then I started walking the course I just ran in reverse. The last 1.5 to 2 miles of the marathon and half marathon course overlap.

I shouted out as best as I could when I saw fellow Rogue athletes Trey, James, Melinda and Stacey completing their marathons. They all looked strong.

I got to mile 24.5ish where Coach Bobby and his wife Margaret were cheering on every marathoner, and asked Bobby if Alan had passed him already. He said, “No, he should be in the next group.”

And there he was. Looking strong, I thought. I waved my arms and shouted to him, “Alan, Alan…You’re looking strong.” I snapped his photo and asked, “Do you want me to run you in?” He said, “Yes, that would be helpful.”

I remembered it was his race and I did as he did. I offered him words of encouragement. In that last .2 as he approached the final hill, he started sprinting and left me behind, as he always does. I was so proud of him. It had become one our typical runs together. He did not look back and I did not expect him to do that. It was his moment as I faded into the background.

My 1st Marathon

I started training for my 1st marathon last September and shortly after my first 16 mile run, I got injured. I went to Advanced Rehabilitation and did all the therapy, but felt compelled to switch from the Austin Full to Austin Half marathon. This marathon season, I was determined, no matter what, I would complete my 1st marathon. I’m a deep thinker and changed my strategy. Any time goal went out the window. I remember telling a seasoned marathoner earlier this season who asked me my time goal, “If I am concerned about finishing, I should not have time goal.” He responded, “Good point.” My focus the past five months has been to remain injury free to get to the marathon start and to bring home my 1st marathon finisher’s medal.

Without going into too much personal history, I got hit by a car while running at 15 years old. I suffered extensive injury to my left leg as the car was traveling at 55 miles per hour, hit my left leg, threw me up in the air 12 feet and shot me 80 feet down the road. At the time I was running with a relative who saw the car, stepped back, and witnessed the accident.

I am lucky to be living, breathing, and walking. I am ecstatic to still be running. I get emotional as I write this because my surgeon, Dr. V., the one who fixed my leg, said I’d be in a wheelchair at 30 years old if I didn’t get the surgery to straighten my leg which was severely bowing out over a number of years from the ages of 15 – 23 years old. Enough said about that.

My 1st marathon day. It could not arrive soon enough. I had some major anxiety about the marathon which climaxed last Saturday 10/15/2011 after a routine 10 mile long run. For the past two weeks, I had been reading other runners’ race reports via email and about other runners’ injuries on Facebook. I said to a friend after last Saturday’s run, “If there were a marathon next weekend, I’d run it. I just want to do it. I’m losing motivation.” Or reality, anxiety had taken over. A woman who had overheard some of my conversation with my friend, another Rogue, all of us Rogues, suggested the book Running Within, by Jerry Lynch and Warren Scott. She also suggested dedicating every 3 miles to a person. I ordered the book on Amazon that day and started working on my dedication list. Instead of dedicating every 3 miles to one person, I dedicated every mile to one person, and the remaining .2 to the car that hit my left leg. I thought, I’m still running, but that car is in a junkyard.

On Tuesday 10/18/2011, I saw a Rogue Facebook post for the Frankenthon Monster Marathon in Cedar Park, Texas. My first marathon was supposed to be San Antonio. But logically, I thought, if I do a 22 miler this weekend, then a 15 miler next weekend, then another 10 miler, what is my risk of injury in the next 3 weeks before San Antonio? High, knowing how I felt I was on the verge of injury. Then, I concluded, I must do the Frankenthon while I am still injury free.

My husband Alan and I discussed it. We were supposed to do our first marathon together. I told him, using more logic, and I was most definitely fear and anxiety driven, “If I don’t get to the starting line at San Antonio, we won’t be doing our first marathon together. I have got to do it this weekend.” I felt very strongly about that. After some more discussion back and forth, he supported me 100%. He got it. I waited one day, thought through my logic and emotion a little more to make certain I was not being impulsive, and I signed up for the Frankenthon on Thursday 10/20/2011.

The day before the Frankenthon, the book arrived, Running Within. I ate pasta early at Enoteca Vespaio, my favorite potato gnocchi, and started reading that book. From that book, for my 1st marathon, I remembered 2 key things: to relax and believe that you are healthy and strong. The muscles respond to thoughts and I needed to be very positive on marathon day.

The morning of the marathon, before the marathon start, I met a few women in the restroom. A real restroom, I thought. As we were waiting in line, we started talking. I told them it was my first marathon. They had all done marathons before and said that they liked this course and were very familiar with it because they all lived in Cedar Park.

The Frankenthon marathon is in Brushy Creek Park. It is a 3 lap course, 8.77 miles per lap. Each lap has 2 sections that are out and back and one section along the water that connects the 2 out and back sections. I had 6 out and back sections and 3 sections by the water total. I knew this marathon would be mentally challenging.

At the marathon start, several more of us chatted. The marathon started at 7:00AM, but the sun was not supposed to rise for another half hour. In the faint light, I could still see other racers’ faces as we talked. I mentioned again to a few women that it was my 1st marathon. I felt relaxed. I told myself to be relaxed. I thought, I am at a neighborhood marathon and the people are friendly.

For the first 11.5 miles, I thought about how the Porta-Potties were spaced too far apart. I was well hydrated. During the first 3 miles, I thought, where is the Porta-Potty? Then, I got to a Porta-Potty. During the next 3 – 4 miles, I thought, where is the Porta-Potty? Then, I got to a Porta-Potty. By mile 11.5, I had to make a different type of stop in a real restroom. A real restroom, I thought. Thank goodness! The nice thing about the course being 3 laps is I felt I knew where I had spotted a real restroom during that 1st lap. I asked a volunteer for confirmation, “Yes, up the hill, around the corner.”
From miles 11.5 – 18, although physically lighter, I struggled mentally. I started getting emotional, on the verge of tears, thinking about getting hit by that car, and I thought, I haven’t done it yet. Meaning, I haven’t completed the marathon yet. I told myself not to cry until the end. Then, I would see women who I met before the race as we passed one another on an out and back and we would smile at one another. Or another racer would see me as we passed and say, “Good job!,” “Well done!” This kept me going.

I remember looking at my dedication list and my brain had become mushy. Once I got to 18, I recall what number 18 said to me during a training run as he passed me, “I think I can. I think I can.” That helped me through mile 18.

Around mile 19, the physical pain set in and the course started emptying of all the new familiar faces I had met before the marathon started and during the several out and backs I had already completed. This is when I really needed to look at my list.

From mile 21-22, Alan was on my list. I thought about how he came to support me on my run. He decided to run his 22 mile marathon training run on the marathon course to be there for me that day. He asked if I wanted him to run with me, but I said no because I did not want to feel any pressure to go faster. I saw him as we passed one another at least three times on an out and back. Each time we passed one another, he high fived me and I liked that. I looked forward to seeing him, and around his mile 20, I got to see him with his shirt off. This made me happy. I thought, He looked strong.

The last 6.2 miles took a lot of mental and physical effort to complete. I remember thinking briefly – very briefly – I could stop at 22 and call it a training run. I thought about the book Running Within and banished that thought. Positive thinking. I am going to finish, I thought. I came here to do the marathon and I am not going to quit. This was the point in the race when I thought about my father. I remember growing up, he taught me not to be a quitter. I was not going to start being a quitter today, on the day I decided to start and complete my 1st marathon. I had no big issues, other than a little pain, normal marathon pain. It was at that point, I decided to dedicate my 1st marathon to my father. Another emotional moment, but I held back the tears. After all, I had more miles to complete, I thought.

Miles 24 – 26.2 were the most difficult. Most of the morning, I ran under cloud cover. But by Mile 24, when I was crossing the dam for the final out and back, I felt the hot sun. I told myself, I only have 2.2 miles to complete. From that point, I was doing all that I could to move my legs forward. I had some pain in my right ankle, an old soccer injury. I tried changing my running gait, but then I felt a pain in my left calf. For most of the race after mile 12, I had sore hips and sore hip flexors that I did not want to push any faster. When I looked at my Garmin, I saw the gradual slowdown from a 12 minute mile pace to a 13 minute mile pace to a 15 minute mile pace to a 17 minute mile pace to a 19 minute mile pace. When I tried walking, I walked a 21 minute mile pace. I thought, slow running is faster.

Some of the inspirational comments I heard during the race:

“You’re still smiling.”
“You’re one of 2 women out here smiling. That’s the way to do it.”
“You’re strong.”
“Keeping moving forward. Forward motion is good.”
“You’re almost there.”

Immediately after I crossed the finish line, the volunteer with the medals congratulated me and put my finisher medal around my neck. Then, I hugged Alan. Shortly thereafter, Lucy, one of women I met in the restroom before the start of the race came over and said, “Congratulations, you did your first marathon. I need to hug you.” And she gave me a hug.

I completed my 1st marathon in 6:00:43.52. As I finish this race report, it is 5:30PM on 10/23/2011, and I feel good. It is a little hard getting up and downstairs, but I do not feel like I injured anything.

We won a costume contest!

I love costumes! And, fortunately, I have a husband who does not mind wearing them!

Last Thursday night, we particpated in the 1st Rogue Raffler of 2011. Rogue Running puts on the Rogue Rafflers for the public and the people participating in their exercise programs.

The object of the Rogue Raffler is to have fun and win prizes! Participants win prizes by running to various downtown locations picking up raffle tickets to be entered into the raffle or through various other means – like winning a costume contest.

Now, I must confess, Alan and I had excellent odds of winning. Of the 100 or so people who showed up, we were 2 of 3 people (total!) who wore a costume. Hmmm…. This seems to be a regular occurrence for us. We wore costumes on Halloween Day for Run for the Water and were 2 of a handful of people who wore costumes for that run. Why aren’t more Austinites wearing costumes? Where is the costumey spirit? Could it be personality type?

For winning the costume contest, we each received a New Balance bag, T-shirt, and towel. Sweet.

Drury Plaza Hotel Riverwalk – San Antonio

This hotel was a surprise gem! Alan and I stayed here for two nights, November 14 and 15, the weekend of the San Antonio Rock ‘n’ Roll Half-Marathon! On business, I have stayed at a Drury Inn at the Houston Galleria and it is an average hotel: perfectly adequate for a business trip or quick overnight stay. The Drury Plaza Hotel Riverwalk is a special hotel. Is it really part of the Drury Hotels chain? Shock!

The woman checking us in told us that it is the largest Drury Hotel in the country! Here is how the Drury Plaza Hotel Riverwalk web page describes it:

The breakfast on Monday morning was delicious and we had appetites! I love biscuits and gravy, but I do not get them regularly: instead, I’m at Einstein’s or The Screaming Goat on Saturday and Sunday for breakfast and neither restaurant has biscuits and gravy! Well, I had to indulge! The eggs and sausage were satisfying. It is hard to mess up breakfast food! I loved the view overlooking the lobby from our breakfast table! We chatted with the table next to us about the race logistics and then we were off to explore The Alamo! It was fun being a tourist in a city which I called my home for 5 1/2 years!

I have stayed in some exceptional city hotels and this hotel compared to the best. It is not a resort hotel; I am not comparing it to the resort hotels where I have stayed. It is an exceptional city hotel! Do not judge it by its name like I did! We would stay here again!

Confusion!
We walked into the lobby of the Drury Inn & Suites-Riverwalk on N. S. Mary’s by accident, thinking that it was our hotel. Promptly, the hotel staff told us that our hotel was down the street.

Running Time Trial

This evening, I did my first running time trial in at least 2 years! It came upon me by surprise! Just how I like it.

Alan has been active in this running group since July, doing speed work and running every Tuesday night. I started with the Tuesday group three weeks ago. And last Tuesday I skipped the workout because it was raining and cold. I do not like rain and cold together. Bad combination!

Tonight, I decided to go. The weather was not perfect. It was 62 degrees, damp, and eerily foggy.

Surprise! Time Trial!

How much did we run overall, including the time trial? 7 miles. Holy Shit!

Time Trial? 2 Miles

“Go as fast as you can!,” the coach said, “To the point of wanting to vomit.” I used to run that way in high school. I have common sense now! I run at a moderate pace for me! I did push it tonight. But, not to the point of pain or vomiting!

No negative splits in this family this evening.

All I can say is: I feel great right now. My belly is full. My mind is relaxed. I am warm under a cozy blanket and ready for more! Once I get some rest.

Running is a great joy. Hard on the joints, I know. But worth the exhilaration, quality time with my husband, and sense of accomplishment.

This morning Alan and I began our run at 7:40AM at Rogue Running.

The distance? 12 miles!
The temperature? 28 degrees! Chilly!
Cold? Yes, starting out. Brrrrrrr!
Overall feeling? By 22 minutes into the run, we had warmed up. Two hours later, we felt even better. The sun came out and the temperature rose to about 40 degrees! Perfect running weather.
Runner’s High? You betcha! Few things compare to being fit and running distance easily.

Running Savvy Tips:

1) Strengthen your hips and core!
2) Practice proper nutrition before running, during the run, and after running.
3) HYDRATE!
4) Dress appropriately for the temperature!
5) Form over speed. If your form breaks down, you may be going too fast.
6) Remember to S-T-R-E-T-C-H and perform foot drills after running.

If you want to learn more about running to prevent injury, Chi Running is an informative book that emphasizes proper running form to prevent injury. I bought it a few years ago and have benefited tremendously from it.

Retirement is about meandering. Before I retired from Corporate America in April 2009, I already knew I would make a commitment to myself to slow down and relax. My inner voice used to be: I need to go here to do X, then over there to do Y, and wait, I need to go to the grocery store, and then I can relax. That is exhausting! When I was 32 or 33 years old, I remember a neighbor observed and said: “I don’t know how you do it all.” Now that is me, saying to others: “I don’t know how you do it all.”

I know how I did it. I focused on going from Point A to Point B and did not stop and view the vista at Point C. I have gained wisdom. I move more slowly. I try to live in the moment. I observe and attempt to remember whatever I can wherever I am. It’s the process that’s important, not the end result.

Our drive from Austin to San Antonio was meandering. Instead of driving on I-35, traffic rich and scenery poor, our trip included a ranch road having spectacular scenery. I remember Alan saying, “We’re not taking I-35.” He had a plan, yet, I did not.

The scenic route from Austin to San Antonio commences on Highway 290 West at the Y in Oak Hill. While driving on Highway 290 West, still in Austin, Alan suggested, as we passed the venue: “Sometime when Vicki and Brian visit, we’ll need to go to The Nutty Brown.” The Nutty Brown is a restaurant with a variety of flavorful food and live music.

At the junction of Highway 290 West and Ranch Road (RR) 165, we turned left onto RR 165; it was the most scenic part of the trip. We saw a lot of trees, ranches and a pop of fall color. “Hey pay attention, now,” Alan captured my interest: “Over this hill is some dramatic scenery, if I remember correctly.”

This is where we start going up a hill, we crest it and over the crest, my jaw drops and I say “Wow!” on every trip. It is as if I have never seen it before! The dramatic wide expanse of breathtaking scraggy land: “This is Texas!,” I exclaim, “This is beautiful! “

Before we knew it, RR 165 ended and Loop 163 went left and right. We were in Blanco, Texas. To our left at the end of RR 165, was The Deutsch Apple Bakery in a metal roofed one story storefront, resembling a converted house, painted red. We had never thought to venture in and check it out until now: “Let’s stop in! I’m hungry,” I said. Alan responded, “I could use a little snack!” The little snack turned into brunch once we discovered the quiche selection inside! Surprise!

From The Deutsch Apple Bakery, we turned left onto Loop 163. Loop 163 quickly became Highway 281. We headed South on 281 to San Antonio.

It’s OK to take the scenic route! Meander a little!

Retirement allows more flexibility to go away for the weekend and return late Monday afternoon or evening. This past weekend Alan and I were in San Antonio to participate in the 2009 Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio Half-Marathon. Before I retired in April 2009, I had never put serious thought into doing a destination half-marathon because I had to analyze how I was going to use my fifteen vacation days and one floating holiday and by the time it came to: Do I use a vacation day for a destination half-marathon?, I had no remaining days to spare!

San Antonio was a blast this weekend! From February 1994 – May 1999, when I was 23 – 28 years old, I lived in San Antonio. It holds a special place in my heart just like my hometown, Worcester, Massachusetts, and my college town, Ann Arbor, Michigan. As I walked around downtown San Antonio today, I thought “This was my home!” and “I grew up here!”
